How much should I expect to spend on a piano?

The old adage is true: You get what you pay for. So, the cost of the piano will range depending on the size, structure (upright vs. grand), age, and brand at which you are looking. At The American Piano Gallery, we pride ourselves in having "The Very Best Pianos in Every Price Range!"

When considering the purchase of a piano for your child (or yourself!) as they begin taking lessons, bear in mind that one of the best ways to keep your child interested in the pursuit of making music is to provide them with a quality instrument. How do I know what size, style and finish of piano I need?

Choosing a piano can be a daunting decision. We recognize that in choosing a piano, you are not only selecting a musical instrument but also an elegant piece of furniture. Furthermore, this purchase is as much a financial investment as it is an emotional and musical one.

Generally, the larger the piano, the fuller and richer tone it offers. You might be surprised as to amount of space your really do have in your home. Our piano specialists are available for in-home consultations. They can assist you in selecting the ideal size & style of a Steinway-designed piano that suits your space, and can provide space planning advice to insure the longevity of your piano investment. Feel free to contact us to setup an appointment.

Furthermore, size is only one consideration. Your piano can grace your home and further your decorating style. Our selection of pianos offers a host of styles and finishes to appeal to your decorative tastes.

However, primary to your selection of a piano should be the way it pleases your ear -- the tone and sound quality. If you or someone in your home is a player, touch will also be of paramount importance. How the action feels under the fingers can be a determining factor as you choose which piano to invest in.

What do I need to consider in selected a good quality used piano?

In selecting a used piano, you should aware of the factors that affect its overall quality. The outward appearance and brand of a piano are not the only things that identify its quality. The location and environment that the piano was in (i.e. humidity and its consistency) as well as the frequency with which it was serviced highly affect its present value because they directly determine the health of the piano's interior mechanisms.

When purchasing a used Steinway piano be aware if the seller states that it has been rebuilt. The Steinway Restoration Center in New York is the only authorized Steinway piano rebuilder in the United States. As a Steinway Dealer, American Piano Gallery can help you determine if the piano was rebuilt by Steinway and has Steinway autorized parts.

As long as the piano has been correctly maintained and was originally a quality instrument, the purchase of a used piano can be a great option for you and your family. However, purchasing a used piano should be motivated by quality and not by a desire to simply save money. Remember, it's usually true: you get what you pay for!

What's the best location in my house for my new piano?

Your piano is much more than just a piece of furniture. Where it is positioned in your home is vital to its longevity.

Your piano should NOT be placed on a non-insulated outside wall, nor near any heating/cooling source. Also, do not place it in direct sun light. Areas where extreme changes in temperature and humidity can occur should be avoided as well (i.e. basements, enclosed porches, sunrooms). A grand piano needs an area twice its size in order for it to be delivered and set up.

Can I move my piano myself?

Absolutely not! A piano is a heavy and carefully-balanced instrument. Our trained piano movers have the specialized skills and equipment to move your instrument, whether the move is between floors in your home or to a new home. Moving the piano by yourself can cause extensive damage to the piano and quite possibly to yourself.

American Piano Gallery offers expert moving and delivery services for your piano. We understand the importance of your investment and are committed to safely moving it. Contact us for additional information about have your piano moved.

How should I care for and clean my piano?

Care:
Pianos are made with delicate moving parts. Just like any fine equipment, proper and routine maintenance is key to its longevity. Complete piano service includes tuning the piano, voicing to adjust the tone of it, and regulating the action for consistency.

Besides the important regular maintenance schedule, it is important to keep a constant humidity level and temperature in the home to prevent the wood from swelling and contracting. This also serves to prolong the tuning accuracy and to ensure that the moving parts of the action are in good working order.

Always use a qualified piano technician to clean the inside of your piano.

If properly maintained, the investment you've made in purchasing your piano will last and can be a legacy for generations.

Clean:
Pianos have a lot in common with other fine pieces of furniture and should be treated with care. When dusting a piano, always use a soft cloth or lambs wool duster, following the direction of the wood grain. When cleaning the keys, use a small amount of mild dishwashing detergent and water. Do not apply the soap directly onto the keys but rather on a washcloth. After completely wringing a damp cloth, clean (do not wash) the keys and dry thoroughly, avoiding contact with the exposed wood of the sides of each key. Consult your piano owner's manual for further guidance.

Do not use any spray cleaners or polish on your piano. Chemicals from those types of cleaners are absorbed into the wood and will make it difficult to repair in the future. Even a small amount of the mist can cause unrepairable damage to the inside of the piano. Always consult your piano technician if you wish have the inside of the piano cleaned. If needing to remove a small object that has fallen into the piano, exercise care so as to not bump the delicate parts inside the piano, as this can cause misalignment.

Here is a wonderful resource for maintaining your piano from Steinway & Sons.
